Sailing Through Nantucket

In a previous post, we outlined some of our favorite spots to go Sailing in Massachusetts.  With so much to cover when it comes to sailing in New England, we thought we'd dive a bit deeper when it comes to Sailing Through Nantucket.  Below are some of the best tips we can give you:

1.) Check for Local Sailing Groups:

One of the most popular is the Nantucket Community Sailing.  The NCS is focused on promoting sailing in Nantucket by providing educational opportunities, leadership skills and developing a appreciating for the maritime environment.  You also have the opportunity to become a member, which comes with discounts and specific member-only opportunities.

2.) Whale Watching:

The World Wildlife Fund named Massachusetts as one of the top 10 places in the world for whale watching.  Whales have been spotted as close as 20 miles off the coast of Nantucket.  The best time of year to go whale watching is between April and October, when they come to the coast of MA for feeding.  The most common whale spotted near Nantucket is the humpback whale, but fineback whales and even sperm whales have been spotted.

3.) Great Point Light:

By far the most famous lighthouse on Nantucket, this is a must see.  Located on the northenmost point of the island, the Great Point Light was first constructed in 1784 before being destroyed by a fire in 1816.  The lighthouse sits on a thin strip on land where the currents of the Altantic and Nantucket Sound meet, providing a beautfil sight to be seen when sailing through Nantucket.

New Call-to-action

4.) Places to Eat:

Nantucket has a number of well reviewed resturants and cafe's to check out for some local cusine.   Below are a few of our all time favorites:

  • Fog Island Cafe - Known for their incredible breakfast menu
  • Black Eyed Susans - A great spot for down to earth New American food.  Black Eye'd Susans is also known for their fun atmosphere and friendly staff
  • Handlebar Cafe - Unquie compared to the others on our list as Handlebar Cafe is actually a community space disguised as a coffee bar, designed to bring locals and visitors together.

Sailing through Nantucket can be an incredibly rewarding experience.  Make sure you check out all the hot-spots but don't forget to relax and enjoy your time on the island!
