It doesn't take a genius to sail a boat, but ensuring your yacht gets to your destination on time and in good maintenance is key. The best way to do so is to find an experienced yacht delivery captain who knows his way around a deck.
Having spent years growing up on sailboats and working as a Deckhand, First Mate, Mate and Captain, I have seen it all. The one mistake folks have said is the most damaging (other than sailing in bad weather) is hiring an inexperienced yacht delivery captain. To avid the mistakes of other, take into consideration the following:
- Talk to References: Anyone can sound good but having multiple references handy is a sign of an experienced captain. If they do not immediately have at least a few references top of mind something is off.
- You Get What You Pay For: If you hire the cheapest company out there, chances are you are going to get the cheapest captain out there. Know the going rates for how far and where they will be sailing and don't cheap out.
- Let the Captain Do His Job: If you choose to come along, make sure you let the Captain take the reigns on the ship. While a good yacht delivery captain always likes a little company, no one likes being told what to do mid job. Trust that you have hired the best.
